There are many classic pairings out there: peanut butter and jelly, chips and salsa, spaghetti and meatballs, etc. Well the people at Buffalo Trace, who have over 200 years of experience in the distilling business, also thought of another classic pairing: bourbon and cigars! In pursuit of this, they set out to make their own perfect cigar to match their world famous bourbon, and the exceptional result is what you have in your shipment today. Starting from the inside out is a tantalizing mix of Nicaraguan and Dominican long-filler ligeros, a Brazilian binder that has been carefully aged in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels for six months, and a golden brown Sumatra Sun Grown wrapper. Medium in body, this smoke will lend notes of cashews and leather with layers of sweetness and oak from the barrel-aged binder. Our panel raved about this cigar and suggested pairing with Eagle Rare 10 Year which is distilled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.

The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
