Latitude Zero is a fairly new boutique brand that hails from one of the largest tobacco growers in the world: Oliva Tobacco Company. What makes this high-end brand unique is that all of their cigars are crafted using the top 1% of their tobaccos and it’s safe to say that Oliva knows a thing or two about tobacco, just ask other companies like Davidoff, Drew Estate, Ashton, and Montecristo who all get their premium tobaccos from them. The Latitude Zero Experimental you have in your shipment is truly one of a kind. Oliva was able to produce the extremely delicate Cameroon wrapper in Ecuador, which to some may not sound impressive but let us assure you, that is no easy feat. In fact, the Experimental is the only cigar on the market with this delicate, handsome wrapper harvested in 2009. If that wasn’t impressive enough, this smoke also features a rare Nicaraguan Criollo ’98 binder from Oliva’s La Joya farm and bevy of Nicaraguan Criollo ’98 long-fillers. Brimming with notes of cedar, sweet-spice, and oak, this medium-bodied smoke pairs best with a Mint Julip.
The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.
The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
