Felipe Gregorio, maker of many a fine cigar, created a near revolution with his 1996 release of the Honduran Petrus line. Lesser known but gaining notoriety as a solid premium cigar is the Dominican incarnation of the Petrus line. Cigar Aficionado rated it a ‘90’ calling it “a medium-bodied cigar with guts.” Crafted with Dominican Olor and Nicaraguan long fillers and a supple & spicy Cameroon wrapper, it’s a complex cigar indeed. Let’s have a look shall we? Ever so slightly box-pressed, this cigar’s Cameroon wrapper is worth a caress; notice how downy smooth it is—quite nearly like silk. We wanted as much of it as we could get, which is why we ordered up a bunch of big ‘ol Churchills for you. Expect deep earthy tones on the palate and look for notes of roasted cocoa beans, leathery impressions, a light flourish of cedar, and a particularly protracted earthy finish. This cigar will work nicely as a midday smoke with afternoon coffee, but also makes for a pleasant evening smoke with spicy food and a robust red cabernet or Shiraz.
